Girls Council Pajama Brunch 2012

As a thank you to our Girls Council for all their help this past semester we had a super fun pajama brunch for them! For the beginning of this new year, we focused on the verse found in Psalm 39:7 that says, "And now Lord, what do I wait for; My hope is in you." We asked ourselves "what is our hope in for this next year?"... Reputation, future plans, boys, accomplishments? If our hope(where our expectations are centered) is in anything other than the Lord, we will experience disappointment. But on the other hand, if our hope is hidden in the Lord, this is the answer to true satisfaction!

We would ask you that you ask yourself this same question in beginning a new year. What is your hope in? What are you expectating this year to bring? Put your hope in the Lord, for as Romans 5:5 says, "This hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us." God's character and God's nature are to be trusted because of the love He so freely gives us through the Holy Spirit! Hope in God!!

“For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made
known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty.” 2 Peter 1:16

Eyewitness: a person who actually sees some act, occurrence, or thing and can give a firsthand account of it. In order to be an eyewitness you must have seen something to give a true account of that situation or thing. Let me ask you, have you seen God? Do you know God, I mean, do you really know Him? What makes Him laugh, what makes His heart hurt, what does He think about? Have you spent enough time with Him to know these things?

Our gracious and great God has revealed to us as much as our minds can conceive, and has done this through His precious Word! Psalm 34:8 “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” It’s personal! You must encounter God personally or you have not encountered Him at all. Henry Blackaby said, “You must encounter God firsthand; or you will become passive, apathetic, or just drop out all together. You must continually encounter God firsthand or your fellowship with God will grow cold. You will quit caring about the concerns of God for His church, for the kingdom, or for the lost world.” Oh, how I pray you would not rely fully on one hour on a Sunday morning to satisfy your longing for something more, something real, something you can really believe (and trust me, everyone desires these things).

Have you encountered God personally? Are they just stories to you (cleverly devised tales) or have you seen God’s character and experienced His grace personally (eyewitness of His majesty)? God desires for you to seek Him and His power and His character rather than repeatedly hearing about Him from other people.

Are they just stories to you, or HAVE YOU SEEN GOD?

Hannah D. is an 8th grader in the Girls Ministry here at Bellevue! You've probably seen here around but we want to get to know her a little bit better so we asked her to tell us a little bit about herself... :)

What is a verse of Scripture that has encouraged you recently and why?

- One verse of Scripture that has recently encouraged me is James 1:17-18 which says, "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, who does not change like the shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all He created." This is very encouraging to me because it says that God is never changing and is always giving me blessings that are perfect for me and just what I need.

Who is a role model for you and why?

- One person that I look up to as a role model is Elizabeth Spiller. She has been my friend since birth, and has always been like a big sister to me. She has always walked faithfully with God and has shown me what being a Godly girl looks like.

If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

- If I were an animal I'd be a puppy! I would be a puppy because they are cute, they get loved and adored by their families and they get to make people happy!

We want to get to know you a little better too! So get a group of friends together and we'll meet for... lunch/dinner/bfast/coffee/shopping/walking/cupcakes/movies/shuffleboard and or yahtzee/karaoke/ manicures...just call/text/email/facebook/approach in the hall/hand written letter to either of us (Christy or Jenny) :)

Cheese biscuits and knit sweaters!

Just thinking about a "perfect day" gets me excited about heaven! I mean if you think about it, everyday there will be the most wonderful day. For now, as I remain here on earth, I can only dream of a "perfect" day. If I were to plan this day, it would be on a Wednesday, my favorite day of the week. It would occur during the month of December, and the skies would be grey with snow-filled clouds. That morning, I would wake up, roll out of bed, slip on my fluffy robe and fuzzy slippers, and get a nice, warm mug of hot cocoa with mini-marshmallows. After I finished my hot cocoa, I would get all dressed up in my winter attire, after all who doesn't love winter clothes? I would wear my purple knit sweater, jeans, pea coat, scark, toboggan, and Uggs (can't forget those). My first event of the day would be ice-skating. I've never tried it and it's on my bucket-list, so why not give it a try. From there I would go to Jim N' Nicks for lunch. Just think, warm cheese biscuits, queso dip, and warm stew. MMM! Then I would get a group of friends together to go sledding. I would choose the tallest hill I could find and have at it! We would sled, have a snowball fight, and build snowmen. After all of that I would probably be so tired, so I would go home and eat dinner which would have to be turkey and gravy, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie! Then I would watch Elf and A Christmas Story by the Christmas tree in my sock-monkey footy pajamas. Finally, before bed I would sit back and think what a wonderful day I had and go to sleep. That is my "perfect" day in a nutshell!

Praying for Nepal.

Sunday.

Nepal faces many personal differences and economic problems. Pray for wisdom, courage, and grace for its leaders.

Monday.

Fifty-five percent of the population is unevangelized. Pray for the unreached:Tibetan refugees, Muslims, mountain peoples, and the Tharu.

Tuesday.

Forty-seven percent of the population is underemployed. Pray for creative,sustainable means of employment.

Wednesday.

The young people are vulnerable to economic exploitation, sex trafficking, drug abuse, AIDS, and more. Pray for changes that will offer hope and a future.

Thursday.

Christians face laws and violence that could prevent them from sharing the Gospel. Pray for perserverance for believers.

Friday.

Christianity has a negative image in Nepal. Pray for discernment, courage, and faithfulness for those seeking to reverse negative opinion.

Saturday.

Christian ministries face many challenges. Pray for practical, innovative ways to address child labor, trafficking of Nepali girls, and disease.

Ask the Lord to give you a heart for people like He has!

Praying for Nations: Namibia

Join us as the Student Ministry prays for Namibia this week:

Sunday: Pray that the nation's leaders will address the issues of poverty, land ownership, and AIDS with wisdom and determination.

Monday: Pray for a biblical faith to be restored in Namibia's churches.

Tuesday: Pray for all to hear the Gospel once again and to turn back to Christ; pray for unity and cooperation of all groups seeking to uplift Christ in this nation.

Wednesday: Pray for current and future pastors and leaders to be trained and formed in God's standards.

Thursday: Pray the major missions as AIM, YWAM, AoG, and SIM would minister to the people of Namibia in the power of the Gospel but also with sensitivity.

Friday: Pray for successful distribution as Christian ministries strive to get a Bible in the hands of every Namibian.

Saturday: Namibia has the fourth highest AIDS infection rate in the world. Pray for the churches and missions to make this issue a long-term priority.

We had such a wonderful week at Jerusalem project a few weeks ago with 7 different service projects. What a great opportunity to Love God through serving people all around the city of Memphis and surrounding areas! We asked Emma to tell us a little bit about her experience with Jerusalem Project and she shared with us…

“Jerusalem Project was a lot of fun! I did Arlington Backyard Bible Club and we also helped for a VBS at Gallaway First Baptist Church. I helped take care of little kids and fell in love with one little girl named Mikayla. All the little kids were very lovable and amazing. I also grew really close to the people in my group who I normally would never talk or had never even met before!It was a really great experience and I can't wait till next year!” Emma E.

"Goodness"

“I’m good. How are you?”

Have you ever noticed that the general public answers “good” every time they’re asked how are you? The word good is used to describe our feelings or analysis of our external circumstances. What you’re initially saying is “I am good” as a result of analyzing your circumstances. For example, when someone asks me “how are you Jenny?” my mind instantly replays everything that has taken place that day to give an answer. I may think, ew, I found a hair in my salad at lunch, or so and so didn’t express the enthusiasm I thought they should have when I said hi to them, or I accidentally ran into the wall on my way out the door (which I do quite often). I collect my analysis and declare that my day was “not so good”. It seems as though I have trained myself to evaluate my situational goodness. The term good has become a skewed vision of how we determine our outside influences, not an observation of our internal state of being declared good because of God’s goodness. Maybe this is why we have such a hard time believing that God is intrinsically good(meaning it belongs to Him by His very nature) because we are so used to looking around us to decipher what is good or not so good instead of looking to Jesus and His word to help us determine what is really good! I will still probably answer the same way when I’m asked that age old question, but with a new perspective of thanking God that He is good no matter what my circumstances might say at the moment! Do you find it hard to believe that God is good even when things surrounding you seem very bad?

The Source

"The Source" is a bi-monthly dinner and night of worship for Single Moms and their daughters. While the moms have dinner and hear from a wonderful speaker, the girls are also having some fun of their own! Junior and Senior girl leaders from Bellevue Girls Ministry help plan the night, serve the food, and love hanging out with the younger girls. Just look and see how much fun we had for "The Source" in the month of June: We tie-dyed t-shirts, made fabric flower head bands, and decorated flower-shaped cookies.Some of us were VERY excited about tie-dying t-shirts!

Leagan, college student, taught the girls how to make flower headbands and also shared about how God cares for us just as He does the lilies of the field (from Matthew 6:28-34). "Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself." Thank you Leagan! We are looking forward to the next "The Source" which will be in August. Praying for Nations: Iran

Join Bellevue Student Ministry in praying for Iran this week. Specific ways to pray:

Sunday: Pray for increased openness to the Gospel among young Iranians disillusioned with Islam.

Monday: Pray for continued protection & influence for Muslim-background believers in Iran.

Tuesday: Pray for perseverance & strength for Iranian Christians who suffer persecution.

Wednesday: Pray for Iranian refugees who live in the United States - that they would see & hear the Gospel clearly & influence others like them.

Thursday: Pray for more people from all over the world who would become encouragers & investors in the Iranian church.

Friday: Pray for Iranian Gypsies, who number 1.3 million & have no Christians dedicated to working among them.

Saturday: Pray for the spread of the Bible among Iranians.

What Makes a Man?

What makes a man? If your thirteen, probably his shirt. Sixteen, his car. Twenty-three, his job and how secure it is. Thirty-one, how well his marriage looks or how well disciplined his children are. Performance, position, possessions...
which is most important to you? If it's any of the three, prepare to be disappointed. In 1 Samuel 16:7 the Lord says to Samuel, "Do not look at his outward appearance or at his physical stature, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." What makes a man? A heart fully surrendered to Jesus. Every girl desires that a guy respect her and love her unconditionally, so ask yourself, how much of his heart belongs to the Lord? Don't expect him to do either of those things for a significant amount of time apart from a relationship with God which is the only true motivation for him to be the man he was created to be. I challenge you to think past the moment! Think past his shiny red car, spikey blonde hair, into his heart and his character, what will last long after his plaid shirt fades.

1. What do you think would be wise to give up in order to grow closer to the Lord?

Probably my time. I am always on the go and some days it is really hard not to get caught up in whatever I'm doing and realize I'm not on this earth for me but for God.

2. What is a verse of scripture that has challenged you recently?

1 Thessalonians 5:17 "Pray without ceasing." It's easy to pray every morning and at night before sleep but this verse has really challenged me to be in constant prayer all day.

3. What is your favorite kind of food? (Mexican, Italian, etc.)

Sushi!!!

4. What makes you laugh the most?

It doesn't take much to make me laugh but seeing people's reactions to pranks gets me every time!

5. Water skiing or mountain biking?

I would love to say water skiing but I probably can't stay up so I guess mountain biking. It is still fun and actually doable.

Cell Phone Etiquette

Have you ever been sitting in a movie theater and right as the best part of the movie comes up you hear someone rudely and loudly talking on their cell as if they are the only person in the room? Annoying, right? Ever wonder how YOUR cell etiquette matches up? Follow these guidelines to avoid becoming that "annoying person" to those around you. :)

1. Be the master of your phone, not a slave to it!

2. Speak softly.

3. Be courteous to those you are with; turn off your phone if it will be interrupting a conversation or activity. For example: if you're on a date with a cute guy, you wouldn't want him answering his phone in the middle of your conversation, right? Unless it is his mom, then we'll let it pass. :)

4. Avoid talking about really personal issues in a public place.

5. Don't make calls in a library, theater, church, or from your table in a restaurant. Make sure to put your cell on silent in these places also.

6. Don't text during class, Life Groups, or a meeting at your job.

7. Remember that whatever you text (words or pics) can be forwarded to others...so don't text personal info.

8. NEVER drive and text at the same time.

Senior Girls Tea: Re-cap

Sunday Bellevue Student Ministry honored our graduating Seniors. The guys ate "guy food" and heard a challenge from Pastor Gaines, and the girls had a Tea at Pastor and Mrs. Donna's house. Mrs. Donna shared with the girls about the importance of strengthening our relationship with the Lord during college and staying in His Word. We also had yummy treats, sweet fellowship, and a time of prayer for these amazing Senior girls. Girls, we love you and look forward to seeing how God continues to use you today and in the days to come!

Sunday: Pray that Germans will take advantage of their religious freedom and take the Gospel to unreached areas.

Monday: Pray German Christians will use their wealth and influence for Christ.

Tuesday: Pray that believers will be unified in their mission and ministry.

Wednesday: Pray that believers will be able to lovingly respond to the growing critics from secular humanists and skeptics.

Thursday: Pray for the continued healing from the 1989 unification.

Friday: Pray for the churches to begin a focused ministry to reach teenagers.

Saturday: While 63% of Germans profess Christ, there are still many unreached. Pray for God to burden the hearts of these believers for their lost countrymen.

Rachel Laster!

1. What are some things that are necessary in attaining uplifting lifelong friendships?

You always have to have honesty as the best policy. Without being able to trust the other person you have no foundation to build anything on. You also have to be willing to listen just as much as you talk. It has to be a good give and take relationship. Also you need to be able to talk about serious issues.

2. What is your biggest pet peeve? (something that annoys you)

Finger nail filing. HANDS DOWN. I loathe it - the sound and the feel.

3. What is one of your favorite things about God?

I love that He is all-powerful, all-knowing, and all things grand and powerful, and at the same time He is my loving Father that cares for me.

4. Do you have a random hobby?

I love dancing with my friends. We act super ridiculous, but it is so much fun.

5. Chicken or steak?

Chicken!

Mom & Daughter Conference Wrap-Up

On April 2nd, 6th-12th grade girls and their moms gathered together for a time of worship, challenge from God's Word, and more! Mrs. Donna Gaines taught our main session, and Mrs. Carolyn Higginbotham and the Girls Council taught the break-out sessions. Girls and moms submitted questions that were answered by an incredible panel of moms, daughters, and the student staff wives.

BIG thanks to Girls Council (leadership team of 11th & 12th grade girls) for their help in planning, teaching, leading worship, and decorating! Each girl decorated their table based off the theme of something they enjoy doing with their mom. We had everything from baking, gardening, camping, traveling, Disneyworld, shopping, picniking, and more! The girls were so creative and talented! God gave us such a sweet time together that morning!

Praying for Nations: Honduras

*Population of 7.6 Million people, and is about the same size as the state of Tennessee

*Literacy rate is 80%*Primarily a Spanish speaking people*10 indigenous languages, 5 of which have the Bible (1 work in progress)

*Average income/person = $1,826 ($5.00/day) or 4% of the U.S.

*"Widespread unemployment, low wages, the devastation of Hurricane Mitch in 1998, and limited development weigh in to make life difficult for the majority, with most of the population below the poverty line." Operation World

*Nearly 1/4 of the population would be considered evangelical; Catholics make up 80% of known believers

*More than half of Honduras' population is made up of children, the majority living in poverty (at the city dumps, on the street, and in gang infested neighborhoods).

*Honduras is home to 60% of Central America's AIDS cases.

Prayer Points: Sunday: Pray that Honduras would continue to experience widespread evangelistic growth Monday: Pray for the protection of Christian converts who leave lives of crime to follow Jesus. Tuesday: Pray that spiritual revival would sweep through the Catholic Church. Wednesday: Pray that God would raise up Honduran ministries that would reach out to the thousands of children who live on the street and at the dump. Thursday: Pray that teams of short-term missionaries from the U.S. would aggressively combine spiritual with social ministry. Friday: Pray for Impacto, a church that reaches out to the "up and out" of the capital city, Tegucigalpa. 1. If you could eat one thing for the rest of your life what would it be?

Croissants, definitely! With either butter or honey. :) I'm a carb junkie. Haha.

2. What is a passage or verse of Scripture you have found challenging recently and why?

Romans 1:8, "First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world." Can you imagine what must have been happening in the Church for their faith to have been reported all over the world? Could that ever be said of the Christians in Memphis? Or even the Christians in all of the U.S.? I just can't fathom the revivals that must have taken place and the values that those Christians must have had. I wish so much that I could see that happen in my lifetime.

3. What advice would you give to younger girls on the subject of living a godly life?

It's all about being purposeful. Some days come where I just want to "cheat" and read my Bible and run without really being prayerful and seeking God's face and will. Reject that temptation with everything in you. Trust me, it's worth it. It was just a few days ago that I had a morning like that, but, by God's grace, I decided to do my full Bible study anyway. It turned out that not two hours later at work God opened the door for me to share openly with one of my lost co-workers about God. I was SO very excited because they were truly interested in what I had to say and kept asking more questions! That was definitely a blessed day! :)

4. What is the best part about being a Senior in High School?

All the great stories you hear about your Senior year are true! It really is a blast! I'd have to say the best parts are the leadership opportunities that automatically come with the territory. You truly do rule the school! Not in a communist kind of way, but you get the picture, haha. You really have to watch yourself, though, because people are, in turn, watching you. It adds a bit of accountability, but that's a good thing for everybody.

5. Polka dots or stripes?

Polka dots, of course. That's just such a fun word to say! Plus, they're cuter on clothes than stripes, in my opinion.

Praying for Nations: Egypt

Bellevue Students are praying for Egypt this week:

Population of 84 million people.
Only 3% of the land is capable of producing crops.
Literacy rate is 71%.
11 indigenous languages, 2 have the Bible.
59% of the Egyptian people are considered unreached with the Gospel.
Annual income/person is $2162 ($5.92/day, or 5% that of U.S.)
Muslim persecution of Christians is well-documented, and has only grown in recent years as Muslims have gained more governmental control and Christians have become more outspoken.
Egypt is about 87% Muslim (representing 73 million people).

Prayer Points:

Sunday: Pray for the Presidential election that will take place later this year - that God will raise up a leader who will bring hope and healing to Egypt.

Monday: Pray that the Gospel will shine in the midst of Egyptian uncertainty and political turmoil.

Tuesday: Pray that Egyptian Christ-followers will show and share the Gospel with confidence, power, and clarity.

Wednesday: Pray that God will stop the influence of anti-Christian groups seeking power to promote anit-Christian agendas.

Thursday: Pray that Egyptian Christians will take the Gospel to the 50 million still unreached Egyptians.

Friday: Pray that Muslim-background believers would boldly practice and proclaim the Gospel among Muslims.

1. Who has made the biggest impact on your life this year?

My parents have most definitely made the greatest impact on me this year with their wisdom, prayers, and guidance as I walk the road toward college.

2. Who is your favorite band?

Kutless (Christian rock) - the message of hope that they relay in their music is so encouraging, and it is obvious that they are in love with the Lord! They sound great both on their rock ablums and their worship projects. Check out "I'm Still Yours" and "To Know that You're Alive." :)

3. What is a passage of scripture that has encouraged you recently and why?

Proverbs 3:5-6 has encouraged me as I walk the college path. I know that if I trust God with my plans, he will direct my paths, even in the places where I can't see where I am going.

4. What is your favorite way to encourage someone?

I love to encourage others by serving them (doing things for them) and physically showing them the love of Christ by being a servant. I also encourage by just being there to listen.

5. Vacation: Beach or mountains?

Ahh! Do I have to decide!? Ok, probably the beach, because I am a daredevil at heart and would love to Jet Ski, parasail, and scuba dive. :)

The One-Child Policy makes having more than one child illegal and punishable by fines, and leads to forced abortions, human rights violations, female infanticide, & abandonment.
The Chinese government attempts to control the teaching and influence of Christianity by forcing churches to register with their "denomination," the Three-Self Patriotic Movement (self-governance, self-support, self-propagation). If churches do not register with the government, they are subject to punishment and persecution if discovered.
105 million Chinese claim to be Christian (about 8%). 75M of these are evangelical.
The Back to Jerusalem Movement aims to send 100,000 Chinese missionaries by foot toward the Middle East as a means to take the Gospel to unreached people groups.

Prayer Points:

Sunday: Pray that God will sustain persecuted brothers and sisters with perseverance and grace, and that their ability to suffer well will serve as a testimony to Jesus and the Gospel.

Monday: Pray for the protection, anointing, and provision of underground church leaders.

Tuesday: Pray for the adoption and care of babies whose lives are threatened due to the One-Child Policy.

Wednesday: Pray for the growing influence and activity of the Church in social causes such as orpan care, human trafficking, care for the elderly, etc.

Bethany Gaines

1. What have you found to be most helpful in seeking the Lord? I have found that setting aside my personal time with the Lord every day is the most essential thing to truly seeking Him. I cannot have a growing relationship with Him if I am not staying in His Word and listening to His voice.
2. What easily fascinates you? People easily fascinate me. I'm kind of a people watcher and love to watch how they interact with one another.
3. Do you have any practical tips for memorizing scripture/reading the Bible? Discipline! It really takes diligence to stick to memorizing Scripture and reading God's Word everyday, and it is more than worth it. God speaks when we are devoted to His Word.
4. If you could speak any language what would it be? I would love to speak Spanish . I took 3 years in High School, but I honestly could not have a full conversation in Spanish. It would be very useful on mission trips and here in Memphis.
5. Reading or writing? I would rather read than write. I've gotten into reading lately, but I wish I was a naturally good writer.

He "gets" you.

Hebrews 4:15 "For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin."

Have you ever been hesitant to open up to someone because you were afraid they wouldn't "get" you? "I can't relate to them," you might say, "they wouldn't understand." Inferiority, pain, disgust, hunger, anger, bitterness, agonizing grief or desire...have you experienced it? Why is it so easily forgotten that Jesus did?! But, He did it right the first time. He was spat on, degraded, laughed at, and completely denied by even some of His own followers. Would that provoke any of the emotions listed above? When we give in to the selfishness our emotions desire from us, this is when sin is birthed. When our lifestyle and actions reflect the emotions whirling in us we become slaves to them. Jesus Christ, our High Priest sympathizes with ALL our weaknesses...He can relate because He's been through it, but He can deliver us because He's stronger.

1 Corinthians 10:13 "No temptation has overtaken you except that which is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it." He is stronger than temptation, stronger than sin, stronger than death! He is Faithful and can deliver you from it. The next time you think "you don't understand! You don't know how hard this life is! You don't have to battle temptation every single hour of every day!" Remember, Jesus did!! Hebrews 12:3-4 "For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls. You have not yet resisted to bloodshed in your striving against sin." He could've lashed out to those who didn't believe, He could've had all the pride in the world about His character and been justified, but He chose humility through the power of the Father. Will you?

This week we are praying for Central African Republic.

-The life expectancy is just over 50 years old.

-Just over 6% of the adult population is infected with HIV/AIDS (this # has decreased from over 15% less than 20 years ago).

-Only 48% of the population is literate

-Out of 71 indigenous languages, 5 have an entire Bible.

-Average income per person is $459/year ($1.26/day)

-They enjoy freedom of religion; 3.1M people profess Christian beliefs

-There are currently 99 missionaries from CAR serving in other parts of the world.

1. What is a verse that has helped you in your walk with the Lord, and why?

Philippians 4:6, I worry about so many things that God is already in control of. This verse is a constant reminder to me to trust in Him, be thankful, and realize that I can only find peace in Him.

2. What is your favorite food?

Sushi and ice cream, but not together. Haha!

3. What advice would you give to encourage girls to seek after God?

That He is everything. As girls, sometimes we think we have it all under control. We have our group of friends, our nice things, etc., but those things can come and go. The only solid thing in my life is the Lord. I can give every part of me to the God who is in control of everything...how amazing is that? Having that security gives me such a realization that I cannot find security in anything else. Girls, nothing compares to finding that completeness in the Lord.

4. Do you have any random interests?

I love doing gymnastics!

26% claim to be Muslim & 53% claim to be Christian
If you lived in Cameroon you would...most likely have 2 to 3 times more brothers and sisters, have a 50% chance of living below the poverty line, and be 3 times more likely to be unemployed.

Sunday: Pray for God to raise up godly leaders that will make a positive contribution to their country and help put an end to widespread corruption.

We want you to get to know some of the great girls we have in student ministry and how God has impacted their lives.

Our first Senior is Jacci Wallace!

1. What has made the biggest impact on you this past year? While preparing for college, the cognition that I am growing up, leaving home, and starting over in a new city has made a decent impact on me this year. Simultaneously, the realization that I will not be alone --that God will be guiding me as I embark on this new chapter of my life--has been my epiphany of 2010. :)

2. What do you do for fun? I enjoy going shopping for fun!

3. What quality do you find most valuable in a friend? Godliness is the quality that I find most valuable in a friend. I enjoy being able to go to that friend for godly advice and for accountability in my walk with Him.

4. What has helped you the most in growing closer to the LORD? Having an accountability partner has helped me the most in growing closer to the Lord. Because my accountability partner is also my best friend, my sister that I never had ;), she knows and understands what I'm going through. Therefore, she knows how to apply what we have learned in our quiet times to my "situations." She is a blessing from the Lord.

Have you read this yet? I've read many books, websites, and other resources about raising godly daughters. Girls are facing a myriad of challenges, issues, pressures, and temptations in our world today. Dr. James Dobson's book, "Bringing Up Girls" has to be one of the best resources I have come across that addresses the culture that our girls live in today and equips parents on how to "bring up" godly daughters. You've got to check it out!

Praying for Nations: Cambodia

This week we will be praying for Cambodia. This country has endured much hardship during the years. More info:

-Population of 15 Million people in a land mass smaller than Oklahoma

-73.6% Literacy rate

-Average annual income is $823 ($2.25/day)
-1 out of every 3 people lives below the poverty line

-23 indigenous languages; 3 complete Bibles

-Only 1 out of every 191 people has internet access

-Buddhism is primary religion, claiming 12.5 Million adherents

-Nearly 2 million people were killed in the civil war/genocide from 1975-1979

-Sex trade victims could be as many as 100,000. Many of these are children.

-If you lived in Cambodia, you would...have a 7.6 times greater chance of dying in infancy, make 95.9% less money, and die 15.7 years sooner.

Sunday: Pray for healing from the wounds of genocide and warfare in Cambodia.

Monday: Pray for continued responsiveness among Cambodians to the Gospel.

Thirst! It's back!

Thirst discipleship groups began meeting again on Sunday, January 16th. We kicked things off meeting all together in the Upper Room with food and fellowship. Then Jennie spoke on "Devotion" and what that looks like in our lives as girls. Here's a quick review:

Devotion defined: profound dedication; earnest attachment to a cause or person.

What can devotion look like in our lives? We can be devoted to a myriad of things or people: schoolwork, ballet, basketball, our phone, Facebook, music, ourselves, soccer, a guy...really anything that we spend the majority of our time, thoughts, money, and speech on. An example of devotion from God's Word is seen in the difference between Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38-42. In Thirst we discussed Mary's actions and compared them to Martha's. Then we looked at what is most important - Jesus's response. Jesus said in Luke 10:41, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only a few things are necessary, really only one for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her."

Girls, if you are feeling overwhelmed, stressed, confused, distracted (like Martha) - put everything down. And focus just on ONE thing: spending time with Jesus. Pray, read His Word, listen to Him. He promises that time spent with Him is never wasted time. (Luke 10:42)

Remember: Mary still did her work (Nope, you can't tell mom and dad that you are not doing chores and homework anymore!). Mary made sure her choices gained her the all-important time she needed to take care of her devotion and commitment to God. It's a choice.

Join us in praying for Brazil this week! Below are facts and updates on Brazil and also ways you can pray daily.

The world's 5th largets country in both land size and population (195M).

Literacy rate is 88.6%.

181 indigenous languages; only 6 complete Bibles.

58 unreached people groups in Brazil.

Average income/person = $8295 (almost $23/day)

91% of population claims to be Christian; of that, 72% are Catholic

Brazil is becoming a "sending" country, sending almost 2000 Christian missionaries in 2010.

36,000 unchurched river communities along the Amazon River that are accessible only by boat.

600,000 girls reported that are involved in prostitution

Prayer Points:

Sunday: Pray that God would raise up Brazilian men, women, and students who would share the Gospel with their lives and their lips amond undeserved and unreached people.

Monday: Pray that God would spare Brazilian children from injustice; that He would sustain them in their suffering; that He would raise up people who would care for them.
Tuesday: Pray that God would raise up Brazilian pastors who would lead their churches to have a heart for people and a vision for the world.

Wednesday: Pray for authentic unity among Brazilian churches and denominations that, fueled by the Gospel, would erase prejudice, racism, and cultural arrogance.
Thursday: Pray for the continued work of organizations like Campus Crusade, who use the JESUS film in 25 different languages.

Friday: Pray that God would raise up North Americans who would come alongside Brazilian leaders to provide theological and financial resources for more effective work.

Saturday: Pray for revival and reform among Brazilian Catholics, who make up 73% of the population.

Praying for Nations: Afghanistan

Each week Bellevue Student Ministry will join together and pray for a different country. We will study this country on Sunday mornings in Connection, and there will be a prayer pointers on the Ink each week for that country. Today we began by praying for Afghanistan, and here are ways you can pray each day this week:

Facts about Afghanistan:

Afghanistan is one of the least reached countries in the world.
There are over 48,000 mosques and not a single church building.
#1 country with the lowest Christian population (.05%).
71 different unreached people groups.
78% of the people do not have access to clean drinking water.
38 indigenous languages; only 1 full Bible and 1 New Testament.

Sunday: Pray for the small number of Afghan believers who risk their life in reaching out to other Afghans disillusioned with Islam and open to the Gospel.

Monday: Pray for the Pashtun people, who make up over 40% of the countries' population and have very few known followers of Christ.

Tuesday: Pray for the endurance and encouragement of Afghan believers who suffer persecution because of their faith.

Wednesday: Pray for the widespread use and publication of the Dari Bible, which can be understood by about 70% of the population.

Thursday: Pray for Afghan students here in the U.S. to see and hear the Gospel accurately and be able to take it back home to their friends and families.

Friday: Justice, opportunity, and freedom from fear for the women of Afghanistan, many of whom are subjected to inequality and even violence.

Saturday: Pray for courageous men and women who will be willing to spend their lives demonstrating and declaring the Gospel among the Afghan people.

"The Lord is near the brokenhearted; He saves those crushed in spirit." Psalm 34:18

To be crushed in spirit is the most painful journey ever taken by man, traveling to every part of you mentally, emotionally, spiritually, even physically. A pain so deep you don't know where it stops and what it's connected to. To crush: to press or squeeze with a force that destroys or deforms. Deform: to make ugly, ungraceful, or displeasing. A deformed soul conforming to all things absurd, formed to what is unnatural: insecurity, fear, pride, hatred, bitterness, anxiety.

What form has your soul taken?

Conformed to the pattern of this world, transformed by the renewing of your mind, or deformed by inexpressible anguish or brokenhearted experiences? Luke 3:4-6 says, "As it is written in the book of Isaiah the prophet, 'The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be straight, and the rough places shall become level ways, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.'" HE SAVES those who are crushed in spirit, deformed, disillusioned. When? Salvation according to our own time would not be salvation at all, for it would require our control, and if we had control over it God would not be all powerful, and Jesus would not be adequate for our damaged souls. To deny this is to accept the unbelief hidden deep in our wretched hearts, the sin that amazes God.

Do you believe him over your feelings?

No matter how high or low. The Lord is near the brokenhearted, but what will it take for Him to dwell IN your heart? (Ephesians 3:17) Faith. Salvation is established through faith. Do you believe in Emmanuel God with us?

Do you believe He is good no matter what your circumstances declare?

Year of the Bible

On January 1, 2011, Bellevue students will join with the entire church in reading through the Bible chronologically in a year. How neat it will be for all of us to be reading the same passages every week and discussing what the Lord is teaching us individually and as a church family.

In order for all of us to be on the same reading plan, we will follow the plan of the NIV Chronological One Year Bible. We will be making these available at the Student E.R. for $10. A student journal is also available for $10, or you may buy both for $18.

It all begins in just a few weeks on January 1st!

Singing Christmas Tree

Your flesh is simple. It desires devotion to anything other than God, but what does it mean to provide for lusts of the flesh? Provision is defined as providing for, making available, or supplying the needs of. To help us understand, think of it in this way... If you decided you would abstain from ice cream because of your obsession, would it be smart to go and sit in TCBY by yourself for an hour? Obviously you wouldn't do that, but when we hear the voice of God telling us to abstain from certain things because of your increasing devotion to this particular thing, why do we get as close as possible only to give in to temptation? Pay very close attention to your thoughts. The more you dwell on something the more likely you are to act on it. If you know you are not supposed to tear someone down verbally, is it helping to think those things? This is provision for your flesh. In order, thoughts become actions, actions become habits, habits become strongholds, and strongholds become idolatry (higher devotion for something other than God). How are your thoughts ultimately providing for the lust of your flesh?

Sunday was our last meeting of the Fall semester for Thirst (we will pick back up in January). Each of the groups has learned so much these last 9 weeks, and we are so grateful for Meagan, Jenny, Christy, Nicole, Lindsey, and Jennie for teaching and leading! For our last meeting, we all gathered together to share what the Lord has taught us and encourage one another as we follow Christ. Our memory verse for this week is:

"Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever." Psalm 73:25,26

May this be the testimony of our lives today!

Redefining Beautiful

A group of high school girls from Colleyville Heritage High School in Colleyville, TX are changing the way we define beauty. Each Tuesday they come to school without any makeup on, and wearing purple shirts that say "Redefining Beautiful; One Girl at a Time." They have been an inspiration to girls and women all across the country.

This past weekend my nephew was born, and it was such an exciting day! I became an Aunt to an incredibly adorable little guy. He was born Friday morning, and immediately I posted on Twitter and Facebook, and I told everyone I ran into about my new nephew. As I was telling everyone, I realized that when something exciting happens in our lives, we want to share with everyone! Think back to a time in your life when something exciting happened...didn't you want to share with your friends, family, and those close to you?

This made me think back to the most phenomenal event to ever take place in my life - when I accepted Christ as Lord and Savior and surrendered my life to Him. Since then, my life has never been the same, and God continues to work in my life today. Just as I shared with everyone about my nephew, even more should I be sharing the incredible gift of Christ and the Gospel with everyone I meet.

Andrew brought his brother to Jesus, and Philip brought Nathaniel (John 1:41-45)...who will you bring to Jesus?

An incredible opportunity is coming up on November 7th, "Friend Day." It's called that, because we are to bring friends, family, and neighbors with us so they can hear about the One who changes lives, Jesus.

Thirst: "Lord, I Want to Know You"

11th-12th grade girls in "Thirst" are going through Kay Arthur's "Lord I Want to Know You" which teaches about the character of God by studying His Biblical Names. For example, this week we are focusing on God Most High, El Elyon. This name designates God as the sovereign, ruler of the universe. This is the name Daniel uses when he is thanking God for interpreting Nebuchadnezzar's dream to him. It is the name Isaiah uses when quoting God to the Israelites in regards to their future. The same God Most High is in control of all people, circumstances, and happenings of today!

Memory Verse: "I will cry to God Most High, to God who accomplishes all things for me." Psalm 57:2

Thirst: "Lady In Waiting"

What 10th grade girls are learning this week in "Thirst" from their leader, Lindsey:

The tenth graders involved in “Thirst” are reading through “Lady in Waiting” by Jackie Kendall and Debby Jones. We are studying how to trust God with His perfect plan for our lives, including finding future mates. But, most importantly, we are learning how to become ladies who truly follow God in radical abandon to Him, seeking His will above our own. We have read about how to be a lady of diligence and a lady of faith. A look into the life of Ruth shows us how God is in control of our lives—every detail—and that we must choose to walk by faith and not by our own understanding or desires.

Memory verse: Hebrews 11:6 “And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.”

Thirst: "Crazy Love"

A look into what the 9th grade girls are learning in "Thirst" this week from their leader, Nicole:

One of the main things we have talked about is a question that Francis Chan ("Crazy Love") asks and that is, " What do you think would be the FIRST thing out of your mouth the moment you saw God?" We have talked about how we want this question to transform the way that we pray. Far too often we find ourselves trapped in the hurried," God thank you for this day...this food....God please help ME do this, ME, ME, ME...." When you think about the fact that you are coming into the presence of the JESUS of the Bible who is seated on a throne in heaven as Revelation describes, our hurried, unintentional, "check it off the list of things to do" prayers seem as though perhaps they are not really prayers at all. We should learn to pray as though Someone is LISTENING - because so often we find ourselves not in a conversation, but in a hurried rambling of thoughts, not even truly focused on the Lord.

Memory verse: Psalm 63:3 " Oh God, You are my God; I shall seek you earnestly; my soul thirsts for You, my flesh yearns for You in a dry and weary land where there is no water."

"Thirst": One Girl Can Change the World

We are learning (from Ch. 2 in "One Girl Can Change the World") about how God has created our passions for His purpose and how to find out what that is! Also, how to develop your passion into being used for the body of Christ.

"Thirst": Essentials of Prayer

"Thirst" is our Girls' Discipleship that meets on Sunday afternoons (Middle School @ 4pm & High School @ 5pm). Each grade meets separately, with a leader, for a time of accountability, prayer, scripture memorization, and study of God's Word. I wanted to share a bit of what our 7th grade girls are studying this week, and it comes from E. M. Bound's book called "Essentials of Prayer." They are learning how to pray, how to keep a prayer journal, how Jesus prayed, and of course we are praying together! A few tidbits about prayer and our memory verse for this week:

For the Christian, prayer is a relationship - and a way of life.

The praying Christian, as the soldier, fights a life-and-death struggle...littleness, half-heartedness, weakness, and laziness are all absent.

The largest results in praying come to him who gives himself, all of himself, all that belongs to himself, to God.

What God promised Abraham, that through him all the nations would be blessed, has become ours through Jesus. What is that blessing? Galatians 3 describes to us the blessing of the promise of the Spirit and of salvation. The promise of salvation to all nations was given to Abraham and his “seed”, but who is his seed? JESUS. (vs. 6) What does that mean for you? Every promise and every hope and expectation of salvation is found in Jesus, not through living by the law according to verse 18. NO amount of spiritual activity is enough. If it were enough, then it was pointless for Jesus to die for YOU. Nothing you do could ever be worthy of receiving the blessing and promise of salvation from our God! (verses 13-14) Salvation is free through faith in Jesus! (vs. 9) What are you trusting in to save you? Galatians 3:29- And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise... SALVATION!

1 samuel 12:24- Only fear the Lord and serve Him in truth with all your heart: for consider what great things he has done for you.

"I loved being able to be with the kids that have no where else to go, and to get to know them and learn their stories. I also loved the opportunity we had in the different ministry projects like the painting we did for the Green Law Community center."
