Friday Favs

"But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh to fulfill its lust." Romans 13:14

Your flesh is simple. It desires devotion to anything other than God, but what does it mean to provide for lusts of the flesh? Provision is defined as providing for, making available, or supplying the needs of. To help us understand, think of it in this way... If you decided you would abstain from ice cream because of your obsession, would it be smart to go and sit in TCBY by yourself for an hour? Obviously you wouldn't do that, but when we hear the voice of God telling us to abstain from certain things because of your increasing devotion to this particular thing, why do we get as close as possible only to give in to temptation? Pay very close attention to your thoughts. The more you dwell on something the more likely you are to act on it. If you know you are not supposed to tear someone down verbally, is it helping to think those things? This is provision for your flesh. In order, thoughts become actions, actions become habits, habits become strongholds, and strongholds become idolatry (higher devotion for something other than God). How are your thoughts ultimately providing for the lust of your flesh?

Friday Favs: "My God"

My God

You make the mountains fall into the midst of the sea,

You make a river of peace flow over me,

You make the deaf hear and the mute speak,

You give joy to the sorrowful and strength to the weak,

You can rise up one man to bring life to a nation,

You love me freely without hesitation,

You heal every wound, touch every scar,

You erase our sin, and send it away so far,

My heart melts at the sound of your name,

I give my life only for your fame,

Joy at its fullest, your presence is the only way,

You always know exactly what to say,

Your greatness, O God, will forever endure,

Please, our heart and soul, to you allure.

Friday Favs: Poetry

Change me, Lord

It seems like every girl has it better than me,
And my frustrations and my flaws are all I see.

Many times this verse I’ve read,
My strength is made perfect in weakness God said.

But I tell Him, I wanna be that, I wanna be this!
I wanna shine brighter, be the girl you can’t miss.!

I made you in my own perfect way,
So why is it I always hear you say,

Change me Lord to be like her,
When it’s you yourself I really prefer.

I may be the only one who sees your true beauty,
To make others see it isn’t your duty.

I know to you your flaws seem prominent.
But to me, they are gifts to you that I’ve lent.

But Lord can’t I live without all this stuff?
My child, my child, My grace is enough!

You don’t have to be accepted by everyone,
All that matters is if you’re found in the Son.

Trust me when He says I love you just the way you are,
You’re His joy and His crown, His bright shining star!

Friday Favs: Galatians 3

What God promised Abraham, that through him all the nations would be blessed, has become ours through Jesus. What is that blessing? Galatians 3 describes to us the blessing of the promise of the Spirit and of salvation. The promise of salvation to all nations was given to Abraham and his “seed”, but who is his seed? JESUS. (vs. 6) What does that mean for you? Every promise and every hope and expectation of salvation is found in Jesus, not through living by the law according to verse 18. NO amount of spiritual activity is enough. If it were enough, then it was pointless for Jesus to die for YOU. Nothing you do could ever be worthy of receiving the blessing and promise of salvation from our God! (verses 13-14) Salvation is free through faith in Jesus! (vs. 9) What are you trusting in to save you? Galatians 3:29- And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise... SALVATION!

Read for yourself! : Galatians 3:1-29
Galatians 2:21
Philippians 3:8-9

Friday Favs: "Crazy Love"

Jenny’s favorite things...
Crazy Love by Francis Chan

“Having faith often means doing what others see as crazy.” Francis Chan presents the view of a Christian life as a passionate love after a God who is worthy of ALL love and affection. He describes a love for God that most Christians wouldn’t even consider because of the culture we’ve been sucked into. Following Jesus entails more than weekly church services but it is a longing that goes so deep that it affects every minute of every day as an endless pursuit of Jesus Christ and the fullness of His grace!

A HIGHLY RECOMMENDED READING. J

Friday Favs

Jenny’s favorite things…

Of all the incredible descriptions in the Bible of who our God is and what He does for us, there is one that I will forever remember as my favorite characteristic of God. Psalm 73:23-“Yet I am always with you; You hold my right hand.” Throughout our lives different situations arise bringing fear, confusion or laughter, but I’m so thankful that God promises to hold our hand through the midst of it all! Holding someone’s hand is a not only a sweet reminder that you are there and you care for someone, but also can be for safety! Isaiah 41:13-“ For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand and say to you: Do not fear, I will help you.” When a mother holds her child’s hand to cross the street it is for his safety. She would never ask her child to cross the street by himself to get to where he needs to be, so she holds his hand and leads him herself, walking right beside him! It is the same way with our God!! So many times we are afraid of the road before us, or afraid of an unexpected collision. But, He never said we’d have to walk alone! He holds our hand, leading us to the “other side”, exactly where He wants us to be! Not only for safety, but holding someone’s hand is a sweet reminder that you are there and that you care for them. One of the sweetest things about our God is that He promises to never leave us! Yet I am ALWAYS with you; (ps 73:23) There WILL be times you are lonely. There WILL be times when you are so afraid of the road before you… But Praise God He holds our hand leading us through it all! Isaiah 42:6-“I, the Lord, have called you for a righteous purpose, and I will hold you by your hand…”

Introducing: Jenny Clark & Friday Favs

We have a new addition to the Student Ministry Team - Jenny Clark is the new Girls' Ministry Intern! In case you have not heard, Leslie Hollowell is now the Women's College Director, and Jennie McKay has moved into the position of Girls Ministry Director. The Lord has wonderful plans in store for the college and student ministry girls, and we are so thankful to be a part!
Please welcome Jenny Clark when you see her in the halls and on the 3rd floor (her pic is below so you can recognize her). She is not a stranger to Student Ministry, as she taught the 9th Grade Girls Leadership Class last Fall, has led the girls in Speakers' Tournament this winter, and has served at girls' events such as the Lock-In. Girls, she is looking forward to hanging out with you and getting to know you!

Jenny will be writing the new "Friday Favs" column of the blog, and this will feature some of her favorite passages of scripture, her favorite things ("rain drops on roses and whiskers on kittens; bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens; brown paper packages tied up with string...you finish the song!), and some of your favorite things as well! Come back this Friday for the First Edition of "Friday Favs!"
