Impact the World: Egypt

Pray this week for the country of Egypt, located in Africa, north of Sudan.

Info: 92% of the people speak Arabic
Literacy: 61%
Languages spoken: 11; 3 languages are still waiting for Bible translation.
Religion: 87% Islam
Persecution: 14th in the world

Praise: The Church has come through nearly 2,000 years of discrimination and severe persecution, yet has retained its strong spiritual character.

Challenges for Prayer:
  • Sharkeya, a remote town north of Cairo has been bringing access of the Internet to thousands of young people. Young web designers have created 1,400 websites both in Arabic and English. Pray that the gospel would be shared through internet, TV, and literature.

  • Persecution of Christians is on the increase. They can face intimidation and police brutality and some have died at the hands of Islamic extremists. Pray for courage for Christians to stand firm in their faith.

  • Egyptian Christians could play a unique role in reaching other Muslim lands in the Middle East. Pray for vision and resources that would equip people for this strategic challenge.
  • Millions of Southern Sudanese have fled to Egypt from the long civil war in Sudan. Many are struggling to survive and find their way in Egypt. Pray that God would meet all their spiritual, emotional and physical needs.

Girls Night Out!

Thursday night 6th-12th grade girls gathered on the 3rd floor for a night just for the girls! We started off with crafts, painting, and mod-podge. Then we feasted on desserts and a chocolate fountain as we studied Mark 14:1-9 about worshiping God through the surrender of our lives to Him. Next we shopped at the clothes swap and found some really cute items! We had such a fun time with each of you girls and it was great to meet some new faces too! :)

Special thanks to all the Girls Council, Senior Girls, and leaders that helped serve!

Friday Favs

Jenny’s favorite things…

Of all the incredible descriptions in the Bible of who our God is and what He does for us, there is one that I will forever remember as my favorite characteristic of God. Psalm 73:23-“Yet I am always with you; You hold my right hand.” Throughout our lives different situations arise bringing fear, confusion or laughter, but I’m so thankful that God promises to hold our hand through the midst of it all! Holding someone’s hand is a not only a sweet reminder that you are there and you care for someone, but also can be for safety! Isaiah 41:13-“ For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand and say to you: Do not fear, I will help you.” When a mother holds her child’s hand to cross the street it is for his safety. She would never ask her child to cross the street by himself to get to where he needs to be, so she holds his hand and leads him herself, walking right beside him! It is the same way with our God!! So many times we are afraid of the road before us, or afraid of an unexpected collision. But, He never said we’d have to walk alone! He holds our hand, leading us to the “other side”, exactly where He wants us to be! Not only for safety, but holding someone’s hand is a sweet reminder that you are there and that you care for them. One of the sweetest things about our God is that He promises to never leave us! Yet I am ALWAYS with you; (ps 73:23) There WILL be times you are lonely. There WILL be times when you are so afraid of the road before you… But Praise God He holds our hand leading us through it all! Isaiah 42:6-“I, the Lord, have called you for a righteous purpose, and I will hold you by your hand…”

Earthquake in China

Two weeks ago we prayed for the country of China, and I wanted to give you an update on the latest situation. A 6.9 earthquake struck the Qinghai province of China early Wednesday. There were reports of several strong aftershocks — one of magnitude 5.8 — all within hours of the initial quake. At least 400 people were killed and 10,000 others were injured. World Vision has a team in the area and asks for prayer specifically for: adequate shelter and warm clothing for children and families, as average temperatures in the area have been hovering between -3 to 14 degrees Celsius. Pray that as this country experiences such a tragedy, that their hearts will turn to the One True God and find help and hope in Him.

Introducing: Jenny Clark & Friday Favs

We have a new addition to the Student Ministry Team - Jenny Clark is the new Girls' Ministry Intern! In case you have not heard, Leslie Hollowell is now the Women's College Director, and Jennie McKay has moved into the position of Girls Ministry Director. The Lord has wonderful plans in store for the college and student ministry girls, and we are so thankful to be a part!
Please welcome Jenny Clark when you see her in the halls and on the 3rd floor (her pic is below so you can recognize her). She is not a stranger to Student Ministry, as she taught the 9th Grade Girls Leadership Class last Fall, has led the girls in Speakers' Tournament this winter, and has served at girls' events such as the Lock-In. Girls, she is looking forward to hanging out with you and getting to know you!

Jenny will be writing the new "Friday Favs" column of the blog, and this will feature some of her favorite passages of scripture, her favorite things ("rain drops on roses and whiskers on kittens; bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens; brown paper packages tied up with string...you finish the song!), and some of your favorite things as well! Come back this Friday for the First Edition of "Friday Favs!"

The Call

"The Call" was the theme of 2010's Disciple-Now weekend. Students from Bellevue and several other churches in the area gathered together for a Friday through Sunday of worship and teaching from God's Word. Glory Revealed led us in worship (you must check them out - they are my most favorite group!), and Brent Crowe and David Nassar taught us about the "Call."

The "Call" to: Salvation, Proclamation, Persecution, and Position.

"Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, here am I; send me." Isaiah 6:8

The weekend was for 7th-12th grade students and consisted of not only the conference, but also small group times in homes, missions projects on Saturday, and time to hang out with friends. Here are a few photos that highlight the weekend:

Thanks to all the incredible leaders, co-leaders, and host homes!

(Some groups even had chocolate facials for their free time!)

(Visit http://www.bellevuestudents.org/ for more pictures!)

We would love to know what you thought about DNOW 2010! Likes? Dislikes? Suggestions for speakers or bands for next year? Leave me a comment below! :)

He is Risen!

What a beautiful, worshipful time at the crosses this morning. At 6:30am in the crisp spring air, we gathered together in praise and adoration of the One True God.

Can you imagine what it was like that early morning when Mary got to the tomb, only to find that it was empty! Amazing! I'm sure she was in shock! Pondering this, we sang "Christ Arose," "He Lives," "One Day," and "Revelation Song." Then we opened our Bibles to Matthew 28:1-10

1Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave. 2And behold, a severe earthquake had occurred, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone and sat upon it. 3And his appearance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow.
4The guards shook for fear of him and became like dead men. 5The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. 6"He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying. 7"Go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead; and behold, He is going ahead of you into Galilee, there you will see Him; behold, I have told you." 8And they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy and ran to report it to His disciples. 9And behold, Jesus met them and greeted them. And they came up and took hold of His feet and worshiped Him.
10Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid; go and take word to My brethren to leave for Galilee, and there they will see Me."

Bro. Steve showed us that there are three commands in this passage:
1) Do not be afraid. (v. 5 & 10)
2) Come and see. (v. 6)
3) Go quickly and tell. (v. 7 & 10)

When something exciting happens in our lives we want to tell others about it! Jesus conquering death and rising from the grave is the greatest miracle and most exciting news ever! Tell someone about Him today!

"He lives, He lives!
Christ Jesus lives today!
He walks with me
And talks with me
Along life's narrow way.

He lives, He lives!
Salvation to impart!
You ask me how I know He lives?
He lives within my heart!

"He Lives" by Alfred Ackley
